National action plan - Lowland wood-pasture and parkland

Vision statement

Wood-pasture and parkland, and their associated veteran trees, have become much more appreciated in recent years, by conservation bodies, foresters and the general public. The habitat has proved difficult to map consistently making it difficult to provide estimates of its total extent and distribution, but it is increasingly recognised in local surveys. Its occurrence in the uplands as well as the lowlands is now accepted. Considerable progress has been made in understanding the processes involved in wood-pastures including both grazing and tree management. Action is underway on a wide range of sites, by a wide range of partners, both local and national bodies to ensure the conservation of overlooked jewels of our countryside.

10000 Site(s) Partial survey 2008 The site number figures are estimates. There are inherent problems with defining the boundaries for wood-pasture sites and progress on developing a national inventory has not been as fast as expected due to staff and organisational changes. However progress has been made through local surveys, national data collation, and the Woodland Trust’s Ancient Tree Hunt.

Latest UK trend

Trend Accuracy of estimate Date assessed Comments
Fluctuating - probably stable Best guess 2008 As we are still gathering information on the resource we cannot give a definite assessment of trend. We are aware of a few sites that are threatened or in declining condition from the SSSI surveys, from Woods and Trees under Threat casework and local surveys. However increased awareness and appreciation of the habitat and associated veteran trees means that the sites are more likely to receive some protection; SSSIs are being brought into recovering or favourable condition; sites are being restored and some new areas of wood-pasture are being created. Hence we feel the 'Fluctuating (probably stable)' category is the most appropriate category. As we improve our assessment of the resource we can start to monitor threats, losses, such that a quantitative assessment should be possible by 2011.

Targets

Code Text UK Status Assessment date
T1 No loss of or significant damage to the extent of known wood-pasture and parkland sites. Target not achieved 2008
T2 6,500 sites (65% of the known resource) to be in favourable or recovering condition by 2010. Some progress (behind schedule) 2008
T3 Restore areas of derelict wood-pasture & parkland to favourable condition (target 250 sites by 2010). Some progress (behind schedule) 2008
T4 Expand the area of wood-pasture and parkland, in appropriate areas, to help reverse fragmentation and reduce the generation gap between veteran trees at 50 sites by 2010. Some progress (behind schedule) 2008
